  • Amenorrhea in female athletes is commonly considered "normal".
  • She has had no period since February 2003
Why?

This athlete's body was just not healing and repairing after workouts even though she was taking in large amounts of protein to build muscle and get a leaner appearance.  She had also greatly reduced her fat intake (Lost 25lbs in the last 9 months). The logic seems right according to popular nutritional theories but 'why' wasn't her body healing and repairing?

Test?

We did bloodwork and some other diagnostic tests.  She had some significant gastrointestinal issues [problems with digestion].  Her bloodwork and other diagnostic tests did not indicate overt clinical disease but the test values were sub optimal. In the case of an athlete, sub optimal test values can mean an increased chance of injury, slow healing and recovery and many other issues that plague athletes.

Low calorie diets typically aren't nutritionally sound diets. This athlete had a LOW cholesterol [119 mg/dl], mildly low thyroid, and mild anemia. As you will see, cholesterol is vitally important in nerve function, healing and repair of bodily cells and hormone synthesis and regulation, which were this athlete's primary presenting symptoms.

Test Results Showed:

  • Hypocholesterolemia (low Cholesterol)
  • Hypoglycemia (low glucose)
  • Dehydration effects
  • Gastrointestinal dysfunction
  • Low Minerals
  • Low Functioning Thyroid
  • Possible infection and/or inflammation
  • Chronic Wasting Symptoms

She was put on a supplement program and dietary guidelines based upon her test results.  Within a few months, she was healing much more quickly after workouts [decrease muscle aches and pains] and was less injury prone. Her cholesterol was up to 135 and within 6 months she had her menses.
